I Meant to Do My Work Today

I Meant to Do My Work Today
by
Richard Le Gallienne

I meant to do my work today—
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land,
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand—
So what could I do but laugh and go?

Lyrics
I meant to do my work todayBut a brown bird sang in the apple treeI know that one tooAnd a buttefly flitted across the field
And all the leaves were calling meAnd the buttercups nodded their smiling headsGreeting the bees who came to callAnd I asked the lizard the time of day
As he sunned himself on a moss groveAnd the wind went sighing over the landTossing the grasses to and fromAnd a rainbow held out its shining hand
So what could I do but laugh and goMy mother died when I was bornI live with my father on our ownAnd we had a cottage where we'd goAnd he died too, now I'm alone
